FORGIVENESS
When You Forgive, Forgive and Forget. - John Hagee
Psalm 103:11, 12 --- For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.
I’ve heard people say that they’ve forgiven something in the past, but they keep reminding us of what happened back then. That’s witchcraft, not forgiveness. Some day you or someone you love is going to need real forgiveness. If not you, then your son, your daughter, your father, or your mother will make a decision in a moment of sin that will destroy their life forever unless they’re fortunate enough to live in a community of people whom they know will forgive them.
I knew a woman who kept a written record of other people’s offenses that she had committed to memory. She was a talebearer and a loveless, Bible-thumping churchgoer. According to her, she and her teenage daughter were so holy they were on the verge of being translated. But when the unwed daughter got pregnant, this woman tragically took her own life. She who would not forgive could not receive. She never gave mercy, and mercy was not coming back. If you don’t give forgiveness, you’ll never receive forgiveness. That’s the law of God, and nothing will ever change it.
I have also read the story of a young nurse in England who fell asleep on the job and then made a routine error that cost a young boy’s life. The director to the hospital was so incensed that he read his report to her demanding the Board of health to expulse her immediately. She stood there in pitiful silence, half-fainting with shame and remorse. When asked if she had anything to say for herself, she stammered out, “Forgive me. . . And give me another chance.” Fortunately, the director heard the far-off word, “Forgive us or debts, as we forgive our debtor‘s” (Matt. 6:12), and pardoned her. Given another chance, the young nurse became one of the most honored nurses in England. She was fortunate to have met someone whose loving heart could forgive.
